Year of Seven, 2023

An elder once said to me, You Are Made of God Things,  and it rings in my head in moments of doubt and conflict.  She was the closest friend, and most important person in my life, aligned with my grandparents and parents. Six months ago,  I birthed a beautiful daughter, and in June,  we said our goodbyes to our beloved mentor and friend Dr. Toni Humber.  JUNE is also my birth month, and year 41 brought one single silver string on my crown.  Funny because, losing our Toni made me feel like it was a coronation in elderhood.  I also felt like my circle of life moment in her passing was to birth her last blessed baby, she would so impact.  They met, a few days before her passing, they joined hands in the air and formed a pyramid, I embraced their hands in the air with my own like a bird's wings for protection and to capture the energy in my veins and fast beating heart.  Gratitude filled me, and I could not cry, I rejoiced and sang for joy. Their visit was incredible,  blessed by the most High.

So, next phase is 40s and I am stacked with a great Guardian. I look forward to what's to come, and continue to lay a legacy and fulfill my dearest elders dreams, whom prepared paths, like Dr Humber. I continue to live out the internal question, What is an activist and how do they live out their impactful life with love and fury.  I walk like I learned in a revolutionary and radical loving Jesus I learned of as a Kid. So this Caro G continues!

Flores y Udsted my cosmic journey with Walter Mercado today

That is a lil exhaustion after board meeting for #blm and #vanessaguillen, a lil teary eye too after watching walter mercado new doc on netflix. I had to pause, I have 29 min left. Why 29. The 30s have been beyond cosmic leading me to a journey of great wonders decolonization identity shifting and peace building. It led me to my own healers journey, my medium are flowers, roots, identity and my love for crystals and nature. I am so deeply intune with my ancestors. My family is so deeply rooted in being healers. My Abuelita and her love for Walter indeed broke the strict and judgemental catholic immigrant upbringing. Made me reach for the stars. Lent a healing and living lens. Thank you forever star #waltermercado y #abuelitaquerida❤️ #songmc #betterworld #forthechildren #fortheculture

The Art of Teaching

2012 has brought me the opportunity to teach at Cal Poly Pomona with the Ethnic and Women's Studies Department. This is where much of my spirit was defined, as I graduated from the program in 2005. It is so wonderful to be back with the faculty I love and joining them in providing alternative learning spaces to not only increase students academic knowledge but to connect with their spirit and to question norms and standards that exist in academia and life in general.

I am teaching a community service learning course. This is a course in which students must dedicate 30 hours in the community and combine course work and class time to be reflective in the work they are doing in the community. The arts - or connecting with the left side of our brain - is a big part of their journey. My class brings together a diverse student body and diverse majors that are not used to tapping into their spirit and artistic part of the human experience. I am up for the challenge and truly blessed to be in this role.
